How to write a book review

The following are some general procedures you could use when writing your book review.

First, write a statement which gives the essential information about the book.

- The book, the title, the author, the type of book etc should be included.

Next, write the authors intention in writing the book. This will usually be in the preface of the book itself. If it's not, you can try to answer the following questions instead...

1. Why did the author of the book write THIS book?
2. From who's perspective is the book written?
3. Is the book written to give you any information?
4. What is the general genre of the book?
5. Who is the books intended audience?
6. Is the book written in a formal or informal style?
7. How is the book organised?
8. How did this book in particular affect you?
9. How well has this book achieved it's intention?
10. Would you recommend the book to anyone else & why?

Now you should state the theme & explain the subject or topic.

Then, explain the method of development used in the book. Use lots of quotations to show examples.

Following on from this, evaluate the book in terms of interest, accuracy, objectivity and importance. Describe and show whether or not the authors arguments are valid or true. You can also respond to the authors argument here.

Next, go into more detail about the author. You may want to include details of his/her reputation, qualifications & influences.

Then add some details about the books format. The type of binding used, the layout, etc.

And finally... summarise.

Analyse and comment on the content of the book & set out your conclusions.

All done. Please let me know if you have any comments for me, below.

What is a book review?

By definition, a book review is a critical analysis, description and evaluation on the meaning & quality of any given book.

It is NOT a re-telling of the book.

When writing a book review, you should focus on the books authority, purpose and the content contained within it.

In a book review, a statement of what the author has tried to do in writing it should always be included.

Whilst there is no 'correct' way to write a book review, this website aims to give you the tools and information you will need to do the best job possible.
